We are still one of the pioneer integrated high schools in Japan.
We research and develop integrated courses in high school which are based on career education.
Furthermore, this school has been selected as a Super-Global School to nurture a global outlook in students.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSTEM
In UTSS, I think the advanced educational technology and the library are the main support system for the students and teachers specially when they are looking for effective resources and reliable information. Sometimes the students are also required to buy some books needed in their respective subjects.
TEACHING SYSTEM
Everyday, at exactly 8:30 in the morning there is a “teachers meeting” in UTSS to share some announcements and information to the teachers. After that, the classes will start at 8:40 as their first period and ends at 3:15pm.
In the beginning of the actual class, normally the teacher uses some strategies on how he/she will open up the topic like a simple activity or a game and then they will proceed to actual class discussion.
MATERIALS AND LEARNING SOURCES
In University of Tsukuba Senior High School at Sakado, they have LCD Projector and speakers in the classroom. It is very helpful for the teachers as well as for the student to improve the learning outcome. Desktop computers (with internet connection) and books are also available in the school library to help the students and teachers in finding reliable resources and information.
MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION
Teachers in UTSS uses different assessment tool/method like formative assessment to evaluate their students. The result of written exams, reflection papers and other activities including the performance tasks are usually the basis of the teachers on how to evaluate the students’ performance in the class.
CURRICULUM
UTSS uses the MEXT curriculum wherein, “Education is an endeavor that aims to fully develop the personality of each and every child, and is essential for children to lead happy lives in the future. In addition, education has the mission of cultivating the children who will be the future leaders of Japan and society, and the importance of such education remains a constant that will remain unchanged across eras. Further, with factors such as intensifying competition from overseas, as society continues to change at a rapid pace, the education of children is becoming increasingly important.”
UTSS is also permitted to implement the IB DP curriculum.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum sets out the requirements for study of the DP.
The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups. Made up of the three required components, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.
The three core elements are:
Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
The six subject groups are:
Studies in language and literature
There are different courses within each subject group.

The core subjects, Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) are delivered and supervised in Japanese, however, students have the option to write their EE in English.
The teachers and staff of UTSS recognize that each student is an individual with unique capabilities and intelligences. The curriculum is designed to encourage and support students in choosing career paths where they will thrive. UTSS graduates are empowered to meet the challenges of a changing world - both local and international.
