SUMMARY AND SUGGESTION

PURPOSES OF PRACTICUM

-This program aims to promote multi-cultural education among the ASEAN Countries. As a pre-service teacher, it is an effective way for me to develop my teaching skills, acquire more knowledge and explore and discover new things about the world. SEA-Teacher Program helped realize my full potential and showcase my ability in the field of teaching.
We are in the world of globalization where we really need to promote collaboration among different countries in order to attain the sustainability of all nations that will benefit in the said collaboration and I am a firm believer that it is very important to establish linkages particularly in the field of the academe.
I considered this program as an important milestone for student- teachers because even at a young age, we were able to experience multi-cultural exposures and we can also build connection among other participants which is vital in promoting and disseminating the importance of the SEA-Teacher program to other people and places.

PROCEDURES OF PRACTICUM

-Upon arriving in Japan on the 6th day of February, we were oriented about the important matter such as our schedules, the things to do and so on.
On Saturday which was the 8th day of February, we did our first presentation with 2D students and they also prepared a “welcome party” for the SEA-Teachers. On the second week of our stay in Sakado, we were able to meet our Cooperating Teacher and Supervisor. They gave us our schedule for the whole three (3) weeks as well as the reflection book that we need to fill out every after the observation or actual teaching.
In terms of lesson planning, our supervisor gave us the freedom to choose and follow our own format of lesson plan which lead us to decide to adapt with the format of the “I-Plan”or Instructional Plan that we used in one of our subjects in the Philippines.
As a matter of fact, our supervisor praised the lesson plan we adapted and told us that he will tell the next SEA-Teachers to follow the same format. I am glad to say that we had a very supportive and appreciative cooperating teacher and supervisor. They were always there to give assistance from the moment we began to work with our lesson plan until we finished our teaching demonstration.
Normally, we are doing consultation with our supervisor about our lesson plan particularly, the content including the time allotment and also how we are going to deliver it. After the actual teaching, we usually conduct “reflection meeting” about our demonstration. They will commend us for the good points we did and about the things we need to improve.
On the last week of our stay in Japan (February 27 – March 5 at University of Tsukuba), we were given the opportunity to facilitate and lead the “TAG-AIMS Student Forum 2020” participants as part of our teaching practice. We were assigned to make a lesson plan about their activity entitled “Gallery Walk” and facilitate it. After the 5 day- activity with the AIMS-Students which including the educational tour, I realized that teaching is not just about discussing a particular lesson in front of a class, it is also about leading and guiding the people around you, exploring new things and learn together regardless of the cultural differences or having different nationalities as a whole.

OUTCOME OF THE PRACTICUM

-I think the outcome of this practicum went well. With the help and guidance of our supervisor and cooperating teacher we were able to exert our full potential and make the success of this journey possible. All the reflection meeting and consultations are really worth it.
Indeed, I learned a lot of things from the people who were always at my back. I am very grateful for their inspiring words and suggestions to improve my teaching skills and become a better facilitator of learning in the near future.
THE CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM

-Language barrier is such a challenge for me in a way that it is very hard to communicate with Japanese people, if you can’t understand each other. During my actual teaching, I had a hard time to really express what is on my mind to furtherly explain the topic into its deeper and wider context because not all the Japanese students are able to understand some English words. Therefore, I need to come up with some strategies on how I will be going to deliver the lesson well considering the situations of some students. Aside from this, I think if I were able to communicate by using Nihongo, it would be easier for me to acquire information and understand the culture, politics or even the social aspects of Japan.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

-It is my honor and privilege to become one of the participants of the Pilot Batch of the SEA-Teacher Program in Japan.
Being in this prestigious program was an experience to treasure for a lifetime for it is not just about having a teacher training in another country but also, it is about learning within the diverse group of people and develop our personality to become better individuals.
Through this SEA Teacher program, I get to be in different classroom scenarios that I know will also happen in the future; I get to assess different types of learners and apply the best possible teaching method; and I get to experience what it will be one day once I get to fully commit to teaching. The moments made in Japan are the memories that I will keep and tell the future faces that I will see that it can also be them and I will forever keep the moments and value them along my journey.
SUGGESTIONS

-As a participant of the Pilot Batch of the SEA-Teacher Program, I suggest to continue this kind of program for it is a great opportunity for those who will be able to experience it. Aside from that, I think the duration should be more than a month or 2 months to be exact because I believe that part of every teaching practice is to explore the culture of the receiving country and learn more about it.
